About

Thrive (Cardiff) is a self funded registered charity run entirely by parent volunteers of children with special needs. Our aim is to offer our very special children, their siblings and families a protective arena where they can play in an exclusive, non-judgemental and supportive environment without prejudice.
All children, including disabled children, have the right to play, have fun and take part in recreational activities. Play has a very important role in a child’s development, helping to develop speech, sensory skills, imagination, independence and perhaps most importantly for our children, social skills. Sadly not all children are given this chance simply because they look or act differently, but Thrive is committed to providing children with special needs these same opportunities.
Without Thrive our children would not have the chance to play and develop as lack of public awareness and understanding prevents them from accessing mainstream recreational activities. We do our very best to ensure that our children don’t miss out on the things that other children perhaps take for granted.

our aims:

  • Offer informal support in a positve non-judgmental environment.
  • Offer weekly play sessions and holiday activities that cater for the whole family.
  • Reduce the feeling of isolation, depression and lack of self confidence that parents of disabled children often feel.
By supporting us you are helping to raise much needed funds to enable us to continue to provide disabled children with opportunities for play and recreation, regular activities during term time and school holidays.

Philippa Williams Was Martin – thanks to Thrive, our family has just has the most memorable weekend – my daughter and I at the Urdd Centre in Llangranog which was organised by an amazing Thrive parent (do go on one of the special needs weekends if you get a chance, various groups and individuals organise them) and our son has had a great afternoon white water rafting today with Thrive siblings – wish we’d have found Thrive 13 years ago, not 3 years ago!  11/6/2012

……..These people are fully au fait with the new system as committee members. all these guys are flat-out on various projects to sort out day-to-day running of Thrive Cardiff and some very exciting new events for 2013 – How Thrive manage to pull off and organise such a comprehensive, action packed, varied and exciting rammed packed schedule is quite astounding, this is all organised by volunteers who are mostly in full-time employment themselves, who give up their own time (in vast and huge quantities) whilst coping with their own challenging family lives, which centre around bringing up their own children with disabilities. I am constantly amazed and humbled by the hours of dedication which have been given so consistently and persistently by so many people for so many years to make Thrive what it is today. I will say this again as i have said before: When I first discovered Thrive Cardiff i thought it was a professionally organised National Organisation with a local Cardiff Branch, I thought Thrive Cardiff had many financial resources drawing on a National network with very robust financial assistance from government & a central national fundraising effort. Imagine my incredulous reaction when, after a few trips and several conversations that i discovered that Thrive Cardiff is nothing of the sort : It is nothing more than a few parents who got together some 16 or so years ago ..determined to provide facilities, play and activities for their children with special needs …..AND …some 16 years later that is exactly what Thrive Cardiff still is : a few parents who work together (part-time and unpaid) , determined to provide facilities, play and activities for their children with special needs……You also wont be surprised to learn that most of those parents who locked together 16 years ago, are all still a very important and active, helpful, integral part of Thrive Cardiff today. committee members, members & organisers volunteer their time, petrol, phone bills etc for FREE – NOBODY at thrive receives a wage or even claims expenses. Everything that Thrive does, it does for Free(or more realistically – at their own personal cost), and we are all in the same position , raising a child with a disability. New members also need to know that “we” are exhausted and need people to help us make Thrive prosper and grow, we welcome help and support in any, and every, way you can dream up, from supporting current and future fundraising ventures to bringing new, fresh ideas for events, activities, trips, fundraising & social activities …please NEVER lose sight of the fact that we have 2 arms, a head and 2 legs just like you, we are just parents with kids with disabilities EXACTLY the same as you , we have just found Thrive the same as you just have and have embraced and are proud to be a part of a wonderful organisation – just as i am sure you are as well. Please also be aware that you DONT need to be on the Thrive committee to help Thrive & your family enjoy a better life, we want and need to hear from you if you can spare anytime to assist in any way at all. Please dont misinterpret what i am saying – Thrive is not about to disappear – it wont – it has the most rock solid passionate support i have ever encountered in my life and will be around for as log as we draw breath – we will be very happy to encourage far more “rock solid support!!” Sorry i got a bit cheesy in places there, just felt the above needed to be said !!!!! Simon – parent to Ben – Severely Classic Autistic and Carys – “mixed bag!” .

  1. Thrive Cardiff, although a registered charity has no financial income & relies solely upon the efforts of parent volunteers and charitable donations in the form of countless hours of volunteered unpaid time from members and others, it is the result of 16 years of helpful donations, kindness, sweat, blood and tears. Thrive are currently trying to raise funds to provide basic holiday accomadation for children with special needs with any disability – no child or disability is discriminated against. Thrive help & facilitate play in a safe environment for all children with disabilities, their siblings and their families – this basic right for children would be impossible for many without Thrive. Over the years Thrive has been, and continues to be a fundamental lifeline and so much more, to so many, and has embraced many families lives for the better. Thrive is a very worthy ongoing organisation which is growing all the time – where disabled children and their families flourish and grow. Thrive Cardiff is built on very solid principals and a rock solid parent support base.
